We are running a wide variety of one-off workshops as well as two session mini-modules. Al of these are designed to introduce you to new techniques or sharpen up the skills you already have. The beginners workshops presume you are just that, so they are absolutely no pressure sessions!
All sessions will be fun, lively and engaging with the emphasis on you getting as much out of it as possible. |

Introduction to Photography

Improving Your Photography
|
A chance to learn more about photography technique, looking at composition, controlling the camera and even a look at choosing equipment when the time comes to upgrade.
This module is spread across 3 weeks instead of 2 to give you more time to take photographs and try out the techniques discussed in class. You may want to use this as an opportunity to develop a portfolio of images for personal or professional use. No prior photography or Photoshop skills needed, but some confidence in computer use will help you get more from the sessions . Don't worry if your camera is a compact or cameraphone, it's all about taking better photos! |
A chance for beginners to investigate the controls on their cameras and learn what they actually do, also a chance to look at some basic photography skills to get more from their camera. You'll be surprised just how much that little chunk of tech can actually do!

An Introduction to Photo Editing

A gentle introduction to photo editing and the power of Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop can seem intimidating when you first see it, but in reality it can be the photographers best friend. This is a fun session that will give you a great start with this great software (which can eaven be got for free!). No prior knowledge needed as you learn how to make basic edits that will make your photos really stand out, but you will get more from the session if you are reasonably confident using a computer.

Many photographers dream of becoming a professional, but it’s not an easy industry to break into. This module will look at ways to take your photography further and will look at ways to earn money with your camera that aren’t always obvious. It’s not all weddings and babies!
Ideally, participants should have basic computer skills and an understanding of basic photography terminology and camera usage but you don't need a hugely expensive camera! July 14th and 21st at 18:15 (3 hours per session) |

An introduction to the techniques and famous practitioners of this increasingly popular artform. It can feel really scary the first time you venture out, but we'll look at how e can overcome the fear! A chance to see some great photographs, look at how they work and see how you can start enjoying it.

News gathering is increasingly image heavy, especially in an age of 24 hour news. The strands of photographer and journalist are becoming increasingly intertwined.
Some of our most important events of recent history, and so much of our own culture, have been captured by photojournalists, from Vietnam, to the fall of the Berlin wall to modern conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the news is always puntuated with powerful images. This short module will look at the work of the best photojournalists in history as well the techniques used by the professionals today. This session will look at how advertisers use imagery to encourage our purchasing decisions, a look at some of the subtle, not so subtle techniques and the often hilariously funny gaffes they make.

How do we understand a photograph? How can we discover the reasons why some images work and others don’t? When we begin to understand photographs how can we use this to make our own photo better? This curious session will look at the strange psychology of images and how we understand them. Be prepared to marvel at the power of your own brain!
